There’s more to the story than just bees.

Donation Update: As of January 29, 2023, we are over $50,000! Let’s keep the momentum going!

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far! Filming is continuing throughout 2023.

This is NOT a doc about the horrors of planetary health issues. This is about an amazing journey with a sense of purpose. It is about people, our connections to the earth and each other.

Eight years, thirty-six murals and installations, and over 10,000 hand-painted bees from Lyons, Nebraska to Smithsonian’s National Zoo to the UK and beyond…This is the story about why and how I became an activist, some incredible things that have happened along the way and what is happening now.

The Concept

A chance encounter with one tiny honey bee launched art activist Matt Willey’s mission to paint 50,000 honey bees around the world. The Good of the Hive is a human story about tenaciously working toward a goal, and realizing that as you were trying to change the world, the world ended up changing you.

The Details

Since I started The Good of the Hive mission to paint 50,000 bees around the world, people have been telling me to make a film about the project. In 2021, the film project began. The crowdfunding campaign was a success and over the last two years, countless hours have gone into this project. But as so many filmmakers know, a documentary film is more about unfolding a story than creating one. The Good of the Hive film is no exception. What started as an idea to create a little film about how this incredible project began, has turned into a feature documentary about so much more.

The team making this film consists of me (Matt Willey), and John DuPre. That’s it so far. I am Producer and Director, and John is Director of Photography and co-editor.  But as with all small scale projects like this, we are both wearing every hat at times. Special thanks to Cameron Nielsen and Nick Patrick for the additional footage used in the teasers.

Thank you to everyone that donated to help me get this project off the ground. It is fully in the works, but because we are taking it to the next level and need bigger funding to do that, I am closing the crowdfunding at this time. But rest assured that the film is happening. I will be fulfilling all of the reward within the next month.

I could not have gotten this far without you!
