Crystal Springs Resort
New Jersey
The Location
Matt created a spectacular hive on the ceiling of the Chef’s Garden at Grand Cascades Lodge, part of Crystal Springs Resort in New Jersey — adding a visual centerpiece to a property that has made pollinator stewardship a defining part of its identity. The resort partnered with Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) and the New Jersey Audubon Society to establish the Black Bear Pollinator Corridor, a dedicated habitat for bees, butterflies, and birds along one of its six golf courses, begun by clearing a JCP&L transmission line right-of-way and planting native grasses and wildflower seeds — a practical collaboration that supports pollinators while also maintaining safe electrical infrastructure.

Why Honey Bees?
The resort’s commitment goes well beyond that single corridor: pollinator-friendly landscapes featuring wildflowers, native trees, on-site hives, and bee nesting boxes have been woven throughout the property, with educational signage posted to help guests understand the vital role pollinators play in the ecosystem.
The Good of the Hive — a global initiative to hand-paint 50,000 honeybees in murals around the world — found a natural home here, its message of interconnection and collective purpose mirroring Crystal Springs Resort’s own deep investment in the health of its local pollinators.
