Home of the Bending Hives

The Bending Hives were originally created as a part of the Colony Expanse installation displayed in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, NYC summer 2018. They are now on permanent display at Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, DC. The Bending Hive sculptures were part of a collaboration between The Good of the Hive, NYC Parks’ Art in the Parks, World Council of Peoples for the United Nations, and the Friends of Dag Hammarskjold Plaza.

Look Closer

The Bending Hives invite your curiosity and imagination. Look closer – from different angles – at the world we share with bees.

The work that The Good of the Hive produces all harkens back to the moment I spent with a honey bee on the floor of my apartment in NYC in 2008. In a matter of a couple of hours I realized I had never really ‘seen’ a bee. When I did look closer, I found a beauty there that I’d never imagined. Inspiring people to look closer is the essence of what The Good of the Hive is about. Beekeeping is a bridge to the natural world for the simple fact that although we ‘keep’ bees, they are forever wild. We are limiting ourselves when we only see what they offer us, rather than seeing them as a species of animal working tirelessly to support all life.
